Analysis Of Arachne And Minerva As A Didactic Work Of...

Crimes of Heaven: Defining â€Å"Arachne and Minerva† as a Didactic Work of Mythology An ancient prose narrative, all versions of â€Å"Arachne and Minerva† warn readers of the consequences facing those who disrespect the gods by recounting Athena’s actions when faced with mortal hubris. In studying prose narratives, William Bascom defined a valid myth as one: set in an earlier world, focused on a main character of a divine nature, and considered sacred and true by its original audience. Ovid’s â€Å"Arachne and Minerva† adheres to Bascom’s definition of a myth because it was viewed as a truthful account of the past, detailed the goddess Athena’s true process of addressing human disrespect, and focused the legitimate divine repercussions that follow†¦show more content†¦Bascom additionally notes that because they take place in an earlier time, a myth can, â€Å"...account for the origin†¦ of animals†¦ and the phenomena of nature,† (4). â€Å"Arachne and Minerva† takes an etiologically relates t he origin of spiders, created to curse Arachne, and explaining that they weave webs to remind her of her hubris (Sanan and van Loveren 153). For Bascom, a secondary qualification to be a valid myth is that, â€Å"their main characters are not usually human beings, but they often have human attributes, animals, deities, or culture heroes,† and here, Athena the goddess behaves like a person would (4). We see even the goddess of wisdom being prone to jealousy in Athena’s internal monologue, â€Å"‘To praise is not enough; I should have praise myself,’† proving even Athena can be affected by human hamartias like resentment (Ovid 1). Contrary to some religious ideals of an immaculate Demiurge, the Greek Pantheon mirrored the unpredictable nature of Greek society, and thus the gods had supernatural abilities paired with anthropomorphic personalities. This adds greater importance to Bascom’s criteria of deity characters with human attributes, because these trusted gods controlled lives of the Greek and Roman people, yet they were just as temperamental as humanity. Viewing the myth through a euhemeristic lens, it is even possible Arachne was a conceited weaver from a small

Motivation And Development Of The Client - 1519 Words

Motivation is what a person wants and how much that person wants it. Capacity contains three categories: relationship, capacity for growth and change, and physical capacity. Relationship capacity is the ability of the client to form relationships with a person or other persons who might be used as resources for helping. Capacity for growth and change is related to the cognitive development of the client. The ability of the client to engage in growth and change can be either independently or with the assistance of a worker. A person’s physical capacity is affected by certain conditions and age. Opportunity refers to whether the client’s environment will allow the client to use the services or to change, such as the availability of resources†¦show more content†¦Her capacity for growth and change will be assessed to determine if she can further her cognitive development. I need to find out if it is possible for her to pursue a GED. She struggled with math and sci ence in school, but perhaps if she had tutoring and motivation she could do better now. She said she enjoyed school, perhaps she would like to go back. I need to determine if she wants to attend GED classes, or try to find a job, and find out if she is motivated to do those thing. I need to determine her capacity for growth and change. She decided to leave home when she was 18, so she did possess the capacity for growth and change then. I will need to assess Florence’s physical and mental capacity to change. She is physically able to keep her home clean, and that could be transferred to employment. I need to determine if she has the opportunity for change. I need to find out if the parenting training close enough to her home, and how she is going to get there. If she wants to earn her GED, I need to find out when and where they occur, and if has access to transportation to get there. I also need to determine if there are any employment opportunities available to someone with an eighth grade education level, and if she has access to transportation to and from a job. I need to determine if she has enough energy to attend the parenting training. I also need to find out

Raphael Example For Students

Raphael Biography Raphael Santi (Raffaello Sanzio) (1483–1520) Italian Renaissance painter, born at Urbino. Son of a court painter, his mother died in 1491 and his father in 1494. Influenced by the works of Uccello, Mantegna, Piero and Signorelli, he was apprenticed to Perugino. The Crucifixion (1503) in the National Gallery, London, is an early masterpiece. He left Urbino and lived in Florence 1504–08, when Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were working there. His Florentine paintings include The Lady with the Unicorn (1506) and The Deposition of Christ (1507), both in the Borghese Gallery, Rome. He moved to Rome in 1508. The rest of his short life was spent in Rome, where his agreeable nature as well as his astounding gifts ensured immediate success. His 26 surviving portraits include Pope Julius II (1511), Pope Leo X (1519), Baldassare Castiglione (1515), several cardinals and himself. Julius II commissioned him to paint frescoes in four rooms (Le Stanze) in the papal apartments at the Vatican; they include the The School of Athens and The Dispute over the Holy Sacrament. After Bramante’s death he was appointed architect in charge of building St Peter’s but none of his proposals survive. He drew the cartoons for the tapestries in the Sistine Chapel (at the same time painting the mythological Galatea cycle for the Palazzo Farnese). He also produced many large and small altarpieces as well as portraits. Raphael’s output was large for so brief a life though in his last years he left completion of his intentions more and more to his assistants (Giulio Romano being the most gifted). He died of a sudden fever, according to Vasari after sexual excess, and was buried in the Pantheon in Rome. Raphael’s nature was receptive rather than dynamic and he absorbed ideas from Leonardo, Michelangelo and ancient sculptures without destroying the unity of his own work. Few, if any, artists have excelled him in the facility with which he transferred his intuitive ideas into paintings.

To Kill A Mocking Bird Essay Thesis Example For Students

To Kill A Mocking Bird Essay Thesis In my opinion theme with the most impact in To Kill a Mockingbird isHypocrisy as shown in three main incidents . These are the teachings of Ms Gatesabout the atrocities of Adolf Hitler whilst she hated blacks ; the missionarycircle trying to show how Christian they are while believing that to be abrother of Christ you must be white and finally the hypocrisy of the Americancourt system in the 30s by saying they stand for justice. In Ms Gatesclassroom we read about her teaching her class that the Jews are beingpersecuted against by the Nazis. According to Ms. Gates this is un Christianand she finds these actions despicable. The hypocrisy of this teaching is shownas soon as she mentions the word persecution. This is due to the fact that sheherself is persecuting the black people of Maycomb by not raising an eyebrow tothe killing of an innocent black man. This lady shows her blindness to theracial problems of the Deep South ( where she lives ) but feels a lot of empathyfor the Jews who are being mistreated and slaughtered in Germany ( manythousands of miles away ) . The missionary circles in the 1930s working in thesouth of America show the two faced nature of white citizens several times ineach meeting . One strong example that springs to mind is Mrs Mariweatherspositive comments about a Christian explorer in Africa helping the evil savagessee the light of Jesus Christ whilst on the other hand she condemns Attacus forhelping an innocent Negro . These so called Christian women safely say well doneto a man helping African black people ( who were happy with their lives in thefirst place ) but if anyone should help out a black person anywhere near them itthen becomes Nigger loving and should be condemned by all within thecommunity. We will write a custom essay on To Kill A Mocking Bird Thesis specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It creates a double standard by showing that as long as racialproblems do not involve them directly they can be tolerant. The American Courtsof the 1930s were also hypocritical.Truth and Justice were held as the mostbasic right for Americans. Truth in the Tom Robinson case was never a factor. The white jury knew that Bob Ewell had beaten and raped his daughter MayaellaEwell and that Tom was innocent .But because a human being had more colourpigment in their skin it was assumed they would be guilty without question ,sotruth was never a factor .Justice also the pride of the American legal system inthe past ,and now but once again in the Tom Robinson trial ,no matter how muchevidence was presented in favour of Tom to prove his innocence, justice wasntdone because Tom had more pigment in his skin than the jurors thereby he wasassumed to be guilty. In my opinion members of the Maycomb community are tryingto fool themselves into believing that they are model citizens and goodChristians, even though a small number amongst them know that they are wrong topersecute and hate due to colour . Hypocrisy and racism were as much a part ofMaycomb society as church and community spirit.
